I want a Tesla Model S "Alpha" so bad. So bad I can taste the copper. Oh to live my life in the day when I drive one of these with my cool sunglasses on (you know the ones), and I pull up to a stop light, next to me, some punk kids in a overly loud Chevy Impala. This is the type of star dust dreams are made of.
I mean according to Left Lane News, the 2012 Tesla Model S can do a 0 to 60 in 5.6 seconds, which, for a car that weighs just under 4,000 pounds, and is powered by electricity only, isn't too bad overall. Faster than my 87 Subaru for sure. It does the 1/4 mile in just under 14 seconds. The only downside I'm seeing (Besides the price per mile for the battery pack), is the fact that once you do get the car on a nice long stretch of deserted highway and let it go full blast, the Tesla Model S tops out at 120mph. I've taken my 2000 Elantra all the way up to 135mph. It sure took it a minute to get there, but man it's worth it. Is that some sort of governor chip or is that really as fast as we can get something that weighs almost two tons to go on electric power.
Do you think in the long run, these cars would save you money? Or at this stage is it only about trying to reduce our impact on the environment? I don't think the price point is quite low enough at that hair under $60,000 mark. I guess that's what happens when you're batteries are so tech that each time you add a 70 mile increase in what you get out of said battery, it costs the end consumer around $10,000. According to this article from All Cars Electric, if you went with the 300 mile range battery pack, it's going to cost the consumer about $42,860. After doing a bit more math, that averages out to roughly $140 per mile. How much is gas again? Oh well, either way it's a cool car, and I'm glad to see them able to get a vehicle up to the under 15 second mark for a 1/4 mile.
